I was drawn to teaching because it has been something I have been doing as a mother for 19 years. English and History are two subjects intertwined which is evident through the literature of the past. Literacy is key in the subjects that I will be teaching. English has a plethora of literature to read and investigate. History has many documents to examine and learn from those people that have recorded the past. Teaching students to compare and contrast through literature or documents will help them to learn to investigate ideals.

ReplyDeleteThanks for your posting. It reminded me of a class I took on college, which was learning about wars through literature and film. We read "All Quiet on the Western Front," watched episodes of "MASH," and so forth. For each movie we watched or novel we read, we talked about what we learned about the war through the film or novel. We also talked about what we learned about society's attitude toward war at the time that the film or novel was written. Novels and films might be great texts for your text set, if you decide to make your text set in the discipline of history. Thanks for your first posting.
I think that is one of the reasons I want to teach as well because I have done it for such a long time with my own children.
